Net Increase of Local PME Jobs Not Taken Up by Applicant Who became New Citizen or Permanent Resident from 2005 to 2020

28 Mr Leong Mun Wai asked the Minister for Manpower from 2005 to 2020, what is the net increase of local Professionals, Managers and Executives (PMEs) jobs that are not taken up by an applicant who has become a new citizen or obtained permanent resident status during this period.

Dr Tan See Leng: The number of local PMEs in Singapore is based on data collected via the Labour Force Survey. MOM started collecting data on respondents’ place of birth from 2010 onwards, hence, this data is not available for the period of 2005 to 2009.

Based on the available data, the majority of local PME growth over the last 10 years, that is, from 2010 to 2020, went to Singaporeans who were born in Singapore. This is also the case for local PMET growth. This means that foreign-born individuals who obtained citizenship or permanent resident status at any point in time before end-2020 accounted for less than half of the increase in the number of local PMEs and local PMETs over the last 10 years.
