Extension of Taxi Driver Licence beyond Age 75 for Those who are Fit

48 Ms Foo Mee Har asked the Minister for Transport whether it will consider allowing taxi drivers over the age of 75 years who remain fit and healthy and who can pass annual assessments to have their vocational licences extended.

Mr Khaw Boon Wan: The physical and cognitive stress on taxi drivers is much more than that on private motorists, as they drive for long hours and must constantly look for fares and respond to passengers. While the annual medical examination can test for visual, cognitive and driving impairment, it cannot adequately assess the effect of such stress and fatigue on the taxi driver. Hence, we feel that an age limit is necessary, in the interests of passenger safety.

This age limit had been raised from 70 years in the 1970s, to 73 years in 2006, and further to 75 years in 2012. We will continue to periodically review the age limit, taking into account improvements in the general health and lifespan of the population.
