Cases of Violence and Bullying in Schools, and Measures to Help Victims

38 Ms Hazel Poa asked the Minister for Education (a) in each year of the past five years, how many cases of physical violence which resulted in injuries have been reported in primary and secondary schools respectively; and (b) how many of such cases have corporal punishment meted out on students who are found to be violent against others in schools.
39 Ms Hazel Poa asked the Minister for Education (a) whether there are standard operating procedures on how schools should handle bullying complaints expeditiously and appropriately; (b) if not, why not; (c) how does the Ministry ensure that (i) victims are protected, treated fairly and not blamed while investigations are ongoing and (ii) appropriate punishments are meted out; and (d) what avenues for recourse are available for victims, especially if the bullying persists in spite of corrective measures, such as counselling.
