66 Mr Melvin Yong Yik Chye asked the Minister for Transport (a) over the past three years, what is the number of road accidents that have occurred at Newton Circus and its adjoining lanes; and (b) how can such road accidents be prevented with better road safety measures.
Mr Khaw Boon Wan: Between 2016 and 2018, the Traffic Police recorded an average of nine accidents per year at Newton Circus and its adjoining lanes.
LTA is conducting works to further improve road safety in the area. These include new crossing facilities to ensure pedestrian safety, U-turn facilities at approaching roads to reduce the number of vehicles using the roundabout, and additional traffic signals so that vehicles entering the roundabout will have their own traffic phase.
LTA and the Traffic Police will continue to monitor the situation at Newton Circus. We urge all users to play their part by exercising caution and consideration when using our roads.
