Plans for Attracting Younger Stallholders to Ensure Viability of Wet Market Operations
Ministry of Sustainability and the EnvironmentSpeakers
Transcript
58 Ms Joan Pereira asked the Minister for Sustainability and the Environment in view of the increasingly older age of wet market stallholders, what measures are in place to attract younger stallholders to succeed retiring stallholders and ensure the continued viability of wet market operations.
Ms Grace Fu Hai Yien: Over the years, stall patronage at wet markets has declined. Changing demographics have led to fewer Singaporeans shopping at wet markets, with more shopping at supermarkets and online. The continued viability of wet markets ultimately depends on whether there is adequate consumer demand rather than just the availability of younger stallholders.
