Measures beyond Imprisonment and Licence Suspension to Deter Drink Driving

37 Ms Poh Li San asked the Coordinating Minister for National Security and Minister for Home Affairs what other forms of punishment beyond imprisonment and licence suspension can be imposed to better deter drink driving.

Mr K Shanmugam: A first-time offender convicted of drink driving faces a fine of between $2,000 and $10,000, or an imprisonment term of up to 12 months, or both. A repeat offender faces harsher penalties, of a fine of between $5,000 and $20,000, an imprisonment term of up to two years, or both. In addition, first-time offenders will be disqualified from driving for a minimum period of two years and repeat offenders will be disqualified for at least five years.

To more effectively deter drink driving, we are also reviewing the maximum allowable breath and blood alcohol concentration limits. We will announce the details when ready.

The message is simple: if you drink, do not drive.
