Maternity Claims for Mothers whose Companies Close Down During Maternity Leave Period
Ministry of Social and Family DevelopmentSpeakers
Transcript
29 Mr Darryl David asked the Minister for Social and Family Development what options are available to new mothers whose companies close down while they are still on maternity leave in terms of being able to claim their full maternity leave benefits.
Mr Tan Chuan-Jin: Employers are obliged to pay maternity benefits to employees retrenched while on maternity leave, even if they close down. This is provided for under the Employment Act and the Child Development Co-savings Act. Employees who are not paid accordingly may approach the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) or the Ministry of Social and Family Development for advice and assistance. MOM will investigate accordingly and take appropriate action, including through the Labour Court.
