Additional Primary and Secondary School in Fernvale Constituency

Speakers

Transcript

16 Mr Gan Thiam Poh asked the Minister for Education whether the Ministry will consider building another primary and secondary school in Fernvale constituency in the near future.

Mr Lawrence Wong: MOE regularly reviews the number of primary and secondary schools nationally and by residential areas to ensure that there are sufficient school places for our students.

There are five primary schools within one kilometre and another 11 primary schools within one to two kilometres of Fernvale.

Posting of secondary school students is based on merit, and MOE plans for secondary schools at a broader, regional level. There are currently more than 20 secondary schools in the north-eastern part of Singapore where Fernvale is.

In our planning for building of new schools, whether for primary or secondary schools, we will need to do a careful study of the medium to longer-term demand for places and our plans for existing schools in the area. When we have made a firm decision to build a new school, we will provide sufficient advance notice to the public on the likely timeline for the opening of the new school.
