Review List of Birds for Sale as Pets to Restrict Sale of Endangered Species

62 Mr Yee Chia Hsing asked the Minister for National Development how frequently does AVA review the list of birds available for sale as pets to ensure that the sale of species which are becoming endangered or threatened is restricted.

Mr Lawrence Wong: The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) regularly reviews the list of birds available for sale as pets in Singapore. This is based on the requirements of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), to which Singapore is a party. CITES classifies species according to the degree of protection that they require. Depending on how critically endangered they are, species are categorised under three CITES Appendices which restrict or even prohibit their trade. CITES amends its listings at the Conference of Parties once every three years, following which, AVA reviews the list of birds available for sale in Singapore.

AVA conducts checks on bird shops in Singapore to ensure compliance. Stern enforcement action will be taken against anyone found to be illegally selling endangered species, including birds. Offenders are liable for a fine of up to $500,000, and/or imprisonment of up to two years.
