Rate of Myopia among Primary School Children and Programmes to Address Uptrend

44 Mr Darryl David asked the Minister for Health (a) what is the rate of myopia among primary school children over the last five years; and (b) whether there are any programmes or plans to address this issue.

Mr Ong Ye Kung: The prevalence of myopia among primary school students has been stable at about 29% for Primary 1 students and 51% for Primary 4 students over the last five years.

The Health Promotion Board will continue their existing efforts, such as the National Myopia Prevention Programme. Required regular outdoor time for preschoolers will continue. Children at high risk of high myopia will continue to be fast tracked for specialist assessment for myopia control treatment.
