Promulgating Stringent Electric Vehicle Battery Standards and Safe Charging Practices

36 Mr Murali Pillai asked the Minister for Transport whether the Ministry will consider promulgating stringent electric vehicle (EV) battery standards and safe charging practices to reduce the risk of fire from the usage or charging of EV batteries.

Mr Ong Ye Kung: This is in fact what we are doing. Both electric vehicles (EV) and EV charging systems (EVCS) are subject to stringent internationally-benchmarked standards, such as the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Regulations.

Singapore's safety standards and precautions for EVCS are stipulated in Technical Reference 25 (TR25), which covers electrical safety as well as other operational safe practices for EVCS. It was drafted with reference to international standards set by organisations like the International Electrotechnical Commission, with additional safeguards added to take into account local conditions.

As EV charging technologies are advancing rapidly, LTA is working with various stakeholders to review TR25 comprehensively, including necessary enhancements to safety, technical and operational requirements, while facilitating industry development.
