New Variants and Resurgence of Infections from Recent Spike in COVID-19 Cases

37 Mr Alex Yam Ziming asked the Minister for Health (a) whether the recent spike in COVID-19 cases at the end of March 2023 are of concern; (b) whether any new variants have been picked up; and (c) what can the public do to continue to be vigilant against a resurgence of infections.

Mr Ong Ye Kung: We expect COVID-19 waves to occur from time to time, similar to other endemic diseases. For the past month, we have been going through another COVID-19 wave. Although COVID-19 cases have been rising, estimated infection numbers are a small fraction of previous infection waves. Average weekly hospitalised cases are not high and the number of intensive care unit cases remain low. Several new Omicron subvariants are currently circulating in Singapore, but there has not been evidence of increased severity among recent new subvariants. The Ministry of Health continues to closely monitor the situation.

We urge those with acute respiratory infection symptoms to wear a mask if they must leave home and reduce their social interactions, especially with vulnerable persons. Vulnerable groups, such as those aged 60 and above, immunocompromised persons and those living in aged care facilities, are strongly encouraged to receive a booster dose one year after their last booster dose.
