Free Sunday Parking at New BTO Projects

75 Mr Kwek Hian Chuan Henry asked ask the Minister for National Development whether the Ministry can extend free Sunday parking to all new BTO projects for both mature and non-mature HDB estates.

Mr Lawrence Wong: Housing and Development Board (HDB) car parks are provided primarily to serve the parking needs of residents. For this reason, HDB will only consider extending the Free Parking Scheme (FPS) on Sundays and public holidays at all newly completed precincts, after parking demand from the new residents has stabilised. This is generally about six months after parking charges are implemented for the car park.

This will ensure that there are sufficient parking lots to support both the residents' needs as well as the expected increase in demand for parking due to FPS. It also avoids a situation where FPS has to be withdrawn subsequently due to insufficient parking spaces for the residents.
