22 Ms Lee Hui Ying asked the Coordinating Minister for Social Policies and Minister for Health for each of the past five years, what are the estimated numbers of annual deaths and chronic health problems that arise as a result of second-hand smoking.
Mr Ong Ye Kung: From the Global Burden of Disease 2023 study, it is estimated that secondhand smoke contributes to approximately 1% of the total disease burden in Singapore. Disease burden is measured using the number of years of healthy life lost due to premature death and disability.
From the same study, the annual total number of deaths attributable to second-hand smoke for Singapore was estimated to be 364 in 2019, 355 in 2020, 368 in 2021, 382 in 2022, and 404 in 2023.
