53 Ms Lee Hui Ying asked the Minister for National Development what are the Government's plans to address capacity constraints in soil disposal and re-use excavated soil waste, given the growing demands for soil disposal capacity in the coming years from ongoing construction and increasing need for soil infill at land reclamation projects.
Mr Chee Hong Tat: Excavated materials (EM) generated by the construction industry from excavation and construction works are typically sent through staging grounds on the mainland to reclamation sites across Singapore, to be reused as reclamation infill.
The Government has worked with the industry to provide sufficient capacity to meet anticipated EM disposal needs. For example, we recently commenced a new reclamation project at Northern Tuas Basin, which further increases our capacity for EM disposal.
We will continue to monitor the situation and work closely with the industry to assess if further measures are required for disposal of EM.
