Motion

Proceedings on Ministerial Statement

Speakers

Summary

This motion concerns a request by Leader of the House Indranee Rajah to allow a Ministerial Statement by Minister Vivian Balakrishnan regarding the situation in Ukraine to be delivered immediately. She argued that the rapidly escalating security crisis required an urgent update on the Government’s position due to its significant implications for the international order and the economy. Although the Budget debate ordinarily takes precedence, she maintained that it was necessary for Members to hear the statement before the debate commenced. Mr Speaker provided his consent for the motion, and the Members present indicated their general assent for the procedural change. Ultimately, the House resolved that the Ministerial Statement by Minister Vivian Balakrishnan be taken now, prior to the start of the Budget debate.
