Clarification

Clarification by Leader of the House

Speakers

Summary

This clarification concerns a factual correction by Leader of the House Ms Indranee Rajah regarding her response during a motion involving the conduct of Mr Pritam Singh. Addressing an earlier question from Ms Cassandra Lee, she corrected the cited provision of the Legal Profession Act from section 94 to section 94A. This specific section stipulates that legal practitioners convicted of offenses involving fraud or dishonesty may be referred for further professional and judicial review. Leader of the House Ms Indranee Rajah emphasized that these referrals are matters for the Law Society, the AGC, and the Courts rather than the House. The written statement was circulated to ensure the parliamentary record accurately identifies the correct legal provision governing the referral of practitioners under the Act.

Transcript

The following statement was made in a reply the Leader of the House (Ms Indranee Rajah) during the Motion, “Expression of Regret at the Conduct of Mr Pritam Singh and Consideration of His Suitability to Continue as the Leader of the Opposition” at the Sitting of 14 January 2026:

The Leader of the House (Ms Indranee Rajah): I think Ms Cassandra Lee had a question about the Legal Profession Act. I think the short answer to that is that under the Legal Profession Act, section 94 does provide that legal practitioners who have been convicted of an offence involving fraud or dishonesty may have to be referred, but that is a matter not for us but for the Law Society, for the AGC and for the Courts. So, that is with respect to section 94 of the Legal Profession Act.
