Evidence (Amendment) Bill

Bill Summary

  • Purpose: To amend the Evidence Act (Chapter 97 of the 1997 Revised Edition) in conjunction with the related Criminal Justice Reform Bill.

  • Key Concerns raised by MPs: No further clarifications or concerns were raised by Members of Parliament during this session, as the substantive debate relevant to the Bill had already been conducted during the preceding debate on the Criminal Justice Reform Bill.

  • Responses: Senior Minister of State for Law Ms Indranee Rajah stated that because the Bill was closely linked to the Criminal Justice Reform Bill and all relevant matters had been previously canvassed, no further substantive responses were necessary in the absence of additional questions from the House.

presented by the Senior Minister of State for Law (Ms Indranee Rajah) on behalf of the Minister for Law; read the First time; to be read a Second time at a Sitting of Parliament on or after 15 March 2018, and to be printed.

Second Reading (19 March 2018)

Order for Second Reading read.

3.23 pm

The Senior Minister of State for Law (Ms Indranee Rajah) (for the Minister for Law): Mr Speaker, I beg to move, "That the Bill be now read a Second time."

Sir, as this Bill is closely related to the previous Bill on the Order Paper, the Criminal Justice Reform Bill, and all the matters that were canvassed in the earlier debate relate to this Bill as well, I believe it may not be necessary for any substantive matters to be addressed here, unless Members also have additional questions or queries. And, if not, I would beg to move.

Mr Speaker: As the debate on this Bill has already been undertaken during the Criminal Justice Reform Bill, are there any further clarifications that Members require? There is none.

Question put, and agreed to.

Bill accordingly read a Second time and committed to a Committee of the whole House.

The House immediately resolved itself into a Committee on the Bill. – [Ms Indranee Rajah].

Bill considered in Committee; reported without amendment; read a Third time and passed.

Mr Speaker: Order. I propose to take a break now. I suspend the Sitting and will take the Chair at 3.45 pm.

Sitting accordingly suspended

at 3.26 pm until 3.45 pm.

Sitting resumed at 3.45 pm
